Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! - Philippians 4:4 Bayside Church of Christ in Virginia Beach, VA

A Great Legacy and a Bright Future

Although known presently as the Bayside Church of Christ and in a strategic location near the world famous Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel along the Virginia Beach coastline, we actually have a long heritage of fellowship and existence in the Tidewater, Virginia area.

Known formerly as the Central Church of Christ, which met on Little John Drive in Norfolk, the Bayside church was first a vision of the evangelistic efforts of those who made up the Central congregation. In the summer of 1976, a 4.5-acre tract of land on Shell Road in Virginia Beach was purchased by the Central congregation, with the goal of planting another congregation in this growing section of Virginia Beach.

Two decades passed and God’s providence made it possible to consider the planting of the new congregation on Shell Road. But, instead of just a small number of Central members moving to the new location as had been earlier anticipated, the leaders and members deemed it advisable to relocate the entire Central congregation to Shell Road. The Little John property in Norfolk was sold in 1996, ground was broken for the construction of new facilities on Shell Road, and the congregation began meeting temporarily at Shelton Park Elementary School, Virginia Beach.

Shortly after this the name was changed from Central Church of Christ to Bayside Church of Christ in order to reflect their new location on Shell Road in the Bayside section of Virginia Beach. Temporary offices for the church were maintained in the Bayside Commerce Park and this location along with assemblies and activities at the school became the hub of activities for the congregation during the completion of the building project on Shell Road.

In June of 1997, the members of the Bayside congregation moved into our new facilities on Shell Road, with 85 in attendance. Since that time, we have been blessed with both spiritual and numerical growth, as our current membership is 325, with an average of 245 meeting together on Sunday mornings for worship and fellowship. As well, we continue to enjoy a positive reception in Virginia Beach, and have members from all over Hampton Roads who now make up our church family.
