Habitat For Humanity

Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads, Inc. is a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. Local affiliates throughout the world carry out the Habitat mission. Since its inception in 1988 Habitat SHR has built 140 homes in South Hampton Roads. Habitat invites people from all walks of life to work together in partnership to help build houses for low-income families throughout the 7 cities of South Hampton Roads. Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Habitat builds simple, decent houses with the help of the home buyer families.

To eliminate poverty housing and make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.

Our volunteer program includes diverse opportunities for youth, seniors, individuals, groups, builders and non-builders alike. The following list is by no means complete as Habitat regularly creates volunteer opportunities based on ever-changing organizational needs. Administrative Support
General office or computer support for daily tasks to long-term projects.

Tool Box Bash
The Annual Fundraiser and 20th Anniversary Celebration will be held in October 2008. Volunteers will be needed to: solicit auction items, sell sponsorships, tables and tickets, build playhouses and games, set-up/breakdown for the event, work the night of the event.

Habitat General Stores
Our resale stores in Norfolk and Virginia Beach sell donated items to fund the construction of more Habitat homes for low-income families. Volunteers can be used in the stores for sorting inventory or clearing space.

Building Programs
During 2008, Habitat SHR will build 20 or more homes. Each home requires a volunteer commitment of 2000 hours and financial contributions averaging $4,100 per day.

Brush With Kindness
Groups of volunteers adopt a project for a needy or elderly homeowner, provide the volunteers and frequently the materials and funding for these projects.
